award winning freelance photojournalist, writer and filmmaker.
An original, creative and intrepid storyteller, I often combine journalism and art on personal projects many of which have been exhibited around the world to critical acclaim. My work has been displayed at the V&A, The Smithsonian Galleries, The Sydney Opera House, Burning Man, The Garden Museum, MIT and Bureau Europa in the Netherlands. My aim has always been to get behind the headlines and to give people a voice.
My first book, War Gardens, published by Quercus in 2018 explores current conflicts through the civilians living through it and gardening as a means of escape.
My second book, My Family and Other Seedlings charts my first year as an allotment holder and new mother in the English countryside just after the covid pandemic.
I have covered war and unrest in the Middle East and Afghanistan since 2007, making Kabul my home for over five years and working there for ten. I have also worked in Gaza, The West Bank, Israel, Eastern Ukraine, Bangladesh, Jordan, Iraq and Guinea during the Ebola epidemic. I have contributed to, among others, The Sunday Times, The Times, The FT, The Telegraph Magazine, Granta, The Guardian, Good Housekeeping, Vice and The Independent.
In 2017 I produced, filmed, directed and narrated ‘The Gardeners of Kabul’, a half hour documentary for the BBC illustrating a chapter of War Gardens. It was nominated for the One World Media award for Special Features. I also singlehandedly produced, filmed and directed my first film ‘Afghan Army Girls’ for Channel 4 in 2011 which involved living on an Afghan Military Base for six months.
I have given a number of sellout talks around the world at festivals discussing the issues presented in my work and the photographs from War Gardens won the Garden Media Guild award for emerging talent.
I have been featured on many podcasts and radio shows. To listen, click the tab ‘Listen’ at the top of the page.
